As a new mom juggling the demands of postpartum life, I felt the need for a break from the daily grind. The routine was beginning to weigh heavily, and I longed for a change of scenery for the sake of my sanity. So, we embarked on a spontaneous four-week European adventure with our 2-year-old and 3-month-old. This journey was more than just a vacation; it was a chance to escape the stress, bond with my loved ones, and explore new horizons. Here’s a look at our journey and the incredible places we stayed along the way.
A European Escape: Traveling for 4 Weeks with a 2-Year-Old and a 3-Month-Old
During the postpartum period, I felt overwhelmed by the relentless demands of daily life. Breastfeeding seemed to consume every waking moment, and I struggled with the disconnect between my new body and the one I once knew. Balancing the needs of my toddler, ensuring he felt loved and received individual attention, while also managing everyday chores and cleaning the house, left me feeling utterly drained. I was determined to be a supportive wife, but the weight of it all felt suffocating. I longed for a change, convinced that breaking free from this routine and experiencing something different could offer a much-needed reprieve. That’s when I turned to my husband and said, “Let’s just go to Italy.” It was in that moment of desperation that our European adventure was born, a chance to escape the stress and embrace the possibility of renewal and discovery.
Lisbon, Portugal: Our journey began in Lisbon, where we stayed in a family-friendly apartment. The city’s vibrant culture and scenic neighborhoods provided a perfect start. We explored charming streets, rode historic trams, and enjoyed leisurely walks through Alfama while our toddler played in local parks.
Cádiz, Spain: Next, we traveled to Cádiz in southern Spain, staying in a cozy apartment by the sea. The city’s charming old town, with its narrow streets and historic buildings, was a delight. We spent our days exploring the beautiful beaches, enjoying the relaxed coastal vibe, and savoring local seafood.
Rome, Italy: In Rome, we stayed centrally, immersing ourselves in the city’s rich history. We marveled at iconic landmarks like the Colosseum and the Vatican while navigating the charming streets. Our toddler enjoyed the open spaces, and we savored authentic Italian cuisine.
Tuscany, Italy: Tuscany offered a serene retreat with our stay in a picturesque countryside villa. The rolling hills and vineyards provided a peaceful backdrop as we explored Florence and Siena. Tuscany’s slower pace was a welcome change, allowing us to relax and enjoy family time. (We spent most of our time in Tuscany and it was 10/10)
Portofino, Italy: We then traveled to Portofino, where we stayed in a seaside hotel with stunning Mediterranean views. The town’s picturesque harbor and colorful buildings created a magical atmosphere. Leisurely walks along the waterfront and the relaxed vibe made Portofino a highlight of our trip.
Milan, Italy: Our final stop was Milan, where we stayed in a centrally located family-friendly hotel. The blend of modernity and historical charm offered a dynamic end to our journey. We explored landmarks like the Milan Cathedral and Sforza Castle while enjoying the city’s vibrant shopping and dining scene.
This was a trip of a lifetime and it forever changed my life. It was a transformative experience. Stepping away from the everyday routine allowed us to bond as a family, explore new horizons, and rediscover a sense of freedom. The journey provided us with cherished memories and renewed energy. For anyone feeling the weight of routine or postpartum stress, I highly recommend taking the plunge into an adventure that offers both relaxation and exploration.
