Our Long Island Fall Getaway With Kids: Vineyards, Farms and Pumpkin Everything

By the time Arizona was still serving up 110-degree days, I was more than ready for a change of scenery.

We spent a week based in Wading River, New York, with cool air, fall color, vineyards, farms, pumpkin patches, and enough outdoor space for the kids to enjoy themselves too.

This isn't meant to be a comprehensive guide to fall on Long Island. It's the very specific version of the trip that worked for us: unhurried days, two vineyard stops, one farm festival, good food, wine, and a break from the Arizona heat.

Why Long Island Worked for Our Fall Trip

The week didn't have to revolve around one big attraction.

We could spend a few hours at a vineyard, stop at a farm, notice another roadside stand, or let the kids stay outside and play without feeling like we needed to rush to the next reservation.

It felt like an actual change of pace, which was exactly what I wanted from the trip.

Palmer Vineyards at Sunset

Palmer Vineyards was one of the most memorable stops of the week.

We were there around sunset, with string lights glowing over the outdoor area and plenty of room to sit at the picnic tables. We ordered wine flights, wood-fired pizza, and a charcuterie board.

The pizza had the crispy crust I always hope for from a wood-fired oven, and the charcuterie board was easy to share. The kids had room to move around while we ate and enjoyed the evening, which made the stop feel relaxed for all of us.

Live Music at Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard

Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard had a different feel—very easygoing, with live music outdoors while we tried white, red, and rosé flights.

The kids danced and played while we sat back and enjoyed the afternoon. It was one of those stops that gave the adults something we genuinely wanted to do without asking the kids to spend the entire time sitting quietly.

The Fall Festival at Waterdrinker Family Farm & Garden

Waterdrinker Family Farm & Garden was the most obviously kid-centered stop of the trip.

There were farm animals, a pumpkin patch, and a big tractor the kids could climb onto. They were thrilled. We could have stayed for hours without running out of things to look at or snack on.

For the adults, there was an on-site brewery. I had a pumpkin ale with a cinnamon-sugar rim, which felt exactly right for the setting, and the food trucks made it easy to grab something without leaving the farm.

What Made the Week Work for Us

The best part of this trip was how much we could enjoy without trying to turn every day into a packed itinerary.

We had a comfortable home base in Wading River, enough time to let one or two outings fill a day, and a mix of places where the adults could enjoy the wine and food while the kids still had room to be kids.

Everywhere we drove, it seemed like we noticed another farm stand, pumpkin patch, apple-picking spot, or vineyard we could save for another trip.

Would I Do This Long Island Fall Trip Again?

Yes.

We came home feeling rejuvenated and grateful for the week together. After so many brutally hot Arizona days, Long Island in September gave us the cool air, fall atmosphere, and slower pace I had been craving.

I wouldn't try to turn our exact trip into a must-do list for every family. But if you want a fall getaway that can include vineyards, farm time, good food, and plenty of outdoor space for kids, this version of Long Island worked really well for us.
